The ‘Bio-Fragment’

A Note to Our Writers

We’re interested in writing for its own sake, not based on who else loves you, so our contributor’s notes don’t list your past publishing credits or your esteemed education or accomplishments, as much as they may have helped you get where you are. We’re here now with your work; let's let it stand on its own.

By now we’re all alert to self-marketing so that career posturing, the intention behind a mention of a book, etc., frankly, may distract from otherwise compelling work. If a reader resonates with your offering, Google is their friend and yours.

Let’s keep it literary. You’ve written a worthy piece and we’re proud to share it on the miscellany, but first we give you free rein to put together a ‘bio-fragment’. Your submission is curated, while this personal note is done at your own pleasure with whatever seriousness or wit your life experience deserves. Tell us something about who you are while leaving aside the usual CV-like credentials.

A graphologist would agree with this approach, claiming that one couldn’t even scribble out a signature—call it a scratch or a flourish—without it revealing so much about the owner of the hand that created it. This is a challenging endeavor, to sum up one’s life in a few words, and as editors we look forward to the impression we get from what our writers choose to say and how they say it.
